This episode is shared in memory of Ferenc Erdélyi, whose passing was recently shared with Ray by his daughter, Nora. We are grateful to preserve his voice, perspective, and story.

Recorded in Budapest, this special episode brings together two generations of the Erdélyi family, each driven by discipline, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace demanding new challenges.

Daniel Erdélyi is a Zurich-based software engineer, new father, and long-distance triathlete. What began as a bucket-list Ironman became an all-in pursuit, with more than 20 hours of weekly training and ambitions to reach the podium at the Ironman World Championship in his age group. Daniel talks candidly about motivation, fatherhood, sibling influence, and his desire to discover the limits of his potential.

In the second conversation, Ferenc Erdélyi reflects on a remarkable life that began in competitive swimming. A national-team swimmer as a teenager, he came close to Olympic selection before building an international career in medical equipment and hospital development. His work took him across Africa and Asia, including nearly eight years in Lagos, Nigeria, where he helped supply hospitals and mobile clinics while also playing competitive water polo. Even into his seventies, Ferenc continued racing and winning in the pool.

The conversation explores:

  • How a family culture of sport shaped Daniel, his sister Nora, and their father Ferenc
  • Daniel’s path from karate and running to elite long-distance triathlon
  • The balance between software engineering, fatherhood, and serious athletic training
  • Ferenc’s years as a competitive swimmer and national-team athlete
  • Building medical infrastructure and relationships across Nigeria and other African countries
  • How example, rather than pressure, can inspire determination across generations

Together, Daniel and Ferenc offer a moving portrait of endurance in its many forms: physical, professional, personal, and generational.
